Newfoundland and Labrador

Depart from our homes across Canada and fly to Deer Lake on the west coast of Newfoundland to begin our journey. In the evening we will enjoy a welcome gathering and have an opportunity to meet our fellow travellers. 

Glynmill Inn (1 night)

This morning, we take the Viking Trail to the beautiful Gros Morne National Park. We will travel along some of the most spectacular coastlines in North America and visit the National Historic Site at Port au Choix, which interprets the intriguing history and lifestyle of the Maritime Archaic people who lived here over 3,000 years ago. Our welcome dinner will take place this evening. 

Plum Point Motel (2 nights)

Today we travel along the coastline to St. Anthony to visit the home of the famous medical missionary, Sir Wilfred Grenfell. The highlight of this day is our visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site at L'Anse aux Meadows, home of Leif the Lucky and the Vikings who settled this area as early as 1000 A.D.

Keep a sharp eye out for whales as we travel across the Strait of Belle Isle to the shores of Labrador. Here we visit the recently discovered whaling station founded by the Basques in the early 1500s and learn about the ‘modern techniques’ used by these whalers and the hardships they endured. Later, visit the tallest lighthouse in the province at L'Anse Amour.

Northern Light Inn (1 night)

We return to the island and continue to explore the rugged coastline, stopping to visit The Arches Provincial Park to learn about the unique and remarkable geological formations that make Newfoundland famous.  

Ocean View Hotel (2 nights)

This morning we take a boat tour across beautiful Bonne Bay to Woody Point where we will spend time exploring Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will visit the new Discovery Centre and view the famous Tableland Mountains. This area earned the park its UNESCO World Heritage status and its nickname as the "Galapagos of Plate Tectonics". 

Bid farewell to the west coast as we take a scenic drive to King's Point, known for its striking geological landscape. This area offers a stunning setting for a morning of whale interpretation and brilliant art exhibits. This afternoon, we commemorate the survivors of 9/11 and the generosity of the Gander locals towards the "Come From Away" passengers, the inspiration behind the hit Broadway musical. 

Sinbad’s Hotel (1 night)

Today, we set out on the scenic 'Road to the Isles,' a route that winds through Newfoundland's coastal landscapes, connecting charming fishing villages and island communities. As we travel across narrow coastal waterways, known locally as 'tickles' and 'runs,' we will make our way to the beautiful Twillingate Islands, one of Newfoundland's oldest and most fascinating fishing communities. Our journey continues to Terra Nova National Park, where we will take in the stunning vistas of Newman Sound. 

Clarenville Inn (2 nights) 

We start our day with a visit to Trinity, one of North America’s oldest communities and a true gem of the island. Next, we will head out to Cape Bonavista for a chance to walk the cliffs and take in the spectacular coastal scenery. In the afternoon, explore Bonavista, the site of John Cabot’s landfall in 1497. Here we will visit the Ryan Premises and have an opportunity to learn from the locals about inshore fishing techniques that have allowed this town to thrive for hundreds of years.

Next, we travel to the Avalon Peninsula and the town of Bay Bulls. From here, we take a boat trip to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, where we can witness thousands of Atlantic Puffins, Murres, and other seabirds nesting during the summer. Witless Bay is also home to many Humpback, Minke, and Fin whales during the summer months, so whale sightings are a possibility. This afternoon, we visit Cape Spear National Historic Park, the most easterly point of land in North America, before heading into St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. 

Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland (2 nights)

In the morning we will tour historic St. John's, the oldest city in North America. Included is a visit to Cabot Tower and Signal Hill where we can view the famous Narrows and admire the architecture of old St. John's. This afternoon is at your leisure for shopping or to explore on your own. This evening we share our farewell dinner.

All good things must come to an end, and so we bid a fond farewell to our newest yet oldest province. As we fly homeward, we carry with us many delightful memories of an authentic Newfoundland experience that we will cherish for years to come.
