Antigua is a Caribbean paradise, with sun-drenched beaches and lush rainforests. Explore the capital city of St. John’s, where the baroque towers of St. John’s Cathedral stand guard. Visit the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and see Arawak and colonial antiquities.

The old volcanoes have hardened and are crusting over with jungle, but they do make for some beautiful serrated scenery across the island. The Pitons, two conical peaks, rise from the ocean on the island's southwest coast. In the north, the island's capital, Castries, snugs into a sheltered bay. Check out the local market on Jeremie Street, explore Derek Walcott Square (named for the Nobel-winning poet), or spend some time on Vigie Beach.

A nutmeg-scented island that dangles at the southern tip of the Windward Islands, with the town of St. George's as its capital. Its high point, Mount St. Catherine, is one of five volcanoes that have shaped the steep, lush, and wrinkled landscape. Santarem is a lively trading centre on the Amazon (Henry Ford invested millions in rubber here in the 1920s). See rubber and Brazil nut trees, learn how the locals make tapioca or swim in the clear blue waters of the Rio Tapajos.

Grass huts, log canoes, hunting and fishing are part of daily life in this remote Amazonian village, a trading post on a bend in the river. Step ashore to purchase an alligator tooth talisman from the local shaman, or forge connections with the local residents.

One of the world's great boomtowns, Manaus rose to glory as the rubber trade exploded in the late 19th century, minting fortunes and redefining opulence for its nouveau riche. The Teatro Amazonas is a copy of the Grand Opéra de Paris, the Mercado Municipal echoes Les Halles, and the Palacio Rio Negro evokes old Portugal as the endless jungle stretches all around.

Known for its popular folklore festival (the Bumpa Festival) and brimming with indigenous culture, you will delight in this remote Amazon island. It is a short walk into the centre of town but you may see the lively Bumpa dancers right on the pier.

Rimmed by white sand beaches and lapped by the deep blue waters of Rio Tapajos, this Amazon village boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil.
