Winter is in the air, and if you haven’t made your winter getaway plans yet, I imagine you will be searching for that perfect warm escape very soon.
Two years ago, I lead a group of fun-loving travellers on an annual journey through a truly natural paradise….Costa Rica! Almost immediately we learned about the “pura vida” (pure life), a slogan that is often associated with this lush, pristine country. With over 25% of the country’s land being protected in the form of national parks and reserves, Costa Rica has earned it’s reputation as one of the world’s most eco-minded countries.
As there has been no army in Costa Rica since 1949, the defense budget was redirected towards education, health and the environment. With over 800 miles of dramatic coastline facing the Atlantic and Pacific and the interior landscape a continual showcase of stunning natural wonders… thundering waterfalls, rainforests alive with over three hundred colourful bird species (including the stunning quetzal), wildlife, volcanoes, geysers and stunning flora, how can one not be impressed?!
Our itinerary explores all of the highlights of this tropical paradise, including a visit to Tortuguero National Park where the bird watching and wildlife is delightful and almost within arm’s reach. During our visit, we could hear a troupe of monkeys swinging from the trees above our cabins in the rainforest. At Arenal Volcano National Park, where there are two active volcanoes, we were able to see tree frogs at night and took advantage of some great photo opportunities. At a very informative tour at a coffee plantation we learned about the process of farming and roasting the beans. I now have an enhanced appreciation of my morning cup of java! A cruise through the mangroves of Damas Island and exploring the Monteverde Cloud Forest were also highlights! We also had leisure time on occasion to relax by the pool or take a nature walk through our resorts’ lush grounds.
Accommodation is in lovely lodges and hotels in tropical settings and staff are friendly, efficient and eager to please. With hotel stays of two nights in each location and three in San Jose, the tour allows for a leisurely pace.
Each winter, Craig Travel offers two departures to Costa Rica. Our February 2nd date is sold out and our February 25th departure is filling up quickly. I encourage you to trade our frigid winter for a couple of weeks of tropical magic, but you must reserve your space soon. Do it now and look forward to a delightful escape this winter!
