One of our most popular new travel traditions is the river cruise. For years we have been offering departures in Europe, in Asia, in the Middle East and more. But here in North America, we have one of the most interesting rivers on which to cruise, the river which is the backbone of America – the Mighty Mississippi.
As a destination, the Mississippi has had river boats, stern wheelers since the time of the early settlers. As elsewhere, the river was the principal means of transport and commerce. Today it is once again developing a following and we are seeing a huge growth in the interest and the options that are now available both on the Mississippi and other rivers (including the Columbia River on the west coast).
Next fall (November 12, 2016) we will enjoy a truly memorable journey that will see us experiencing three of America’s most interesting cities (Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans) combined with a seven day cruise on the Lower Mississippi on board the very gracious and comfortable American Queen, an authentic stern wheeler, built to remind us of the Old West, while ensuring all our creature comforts as we sail.
In Nashville we will visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and will be treated to a very special evening of local hospitality while being entertained by a popular country music song writer and performer (we will not know who it is until much closer to departure). In Memphis, a special dinner has been arranged at the popular Kings Palace Café and we shall visit Graceland, Sun Studios and the many sites associated with Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement.
On the American Queen we’ll feast on sumptuous meals and gracious service as we sail the mighty river en route to New Orleans, during one of the ideal seasons for experiencing this historical heartland of America. Each day we’ll be treated to excursions on shore and lively entertainment on board.
New Orleans is a world unto itself, the home of jazz , the Mardi Gras and so much more. We shall be provided with a thorough introduction to the city, by coach and by means of a walking tour. And our stay will be highlighted by dinner at one of the city’s most atmospheric restaurants.
All in, this will be a journey that you will long remember. But space is limited, so we suggest booking early.
