Someone made a mistake. The tour “Passions of Chile and Argentina” should have have been named the “Lunches of Chile And Argentina.” If an army marches on its stomach, then we marched and wined and dined from Santa Cruz, Chile, through Santiago and across the Andes in step. Our pace was slackened in Mendoza when we casually lunched at one of only three Michelin recommended restaurants in the two countries. Eight courses with paired wines throughout put a glow on the day we won't soon forget.
From there we went to Vendemia…THE wine harvest festival that seemed more like the opening ceremonies of an Olympic Games. Great music, acrobatic dancing and a surprisingly good box lunch (with wine).
Accommodation was varied (18th century estancia to modern hotel), comfortable and interesting. Sleeping was not an issue. Neither were the breakfasts! This tour exceeded most expectations at every turn.
From Mendoza we flew to Iguasu Falls. Simply put, it's one of the wonders of the planet….a must see! The sadness of leaving this inspiring place was soon overcome by arriving in one of the world's most beautiful cities, Buenos Aires. A lovely city centre hotel allowed us to walk and explore. Be sure to visit the Opera House. A day at an estancia with great asado (bbq meat) and wine gave us a superb introduction to the gaucho way of life.
If there was a downside to this adventure, it was having to leave the warm hospitality, great food and, of course, fine wine. We returned home a little heavier but oh so happy to have enjoyed the lunches of Chile and Argentina and so much more!
