Celebrity Cruise Lines is continuing to break away from tradition by naming CEO Reshma Saujani as the godmother of their second ship in the Edge Series, the Celebrity Apex. As the founder of the international non-profit organization, Girls Who Code, Reshma has dedicated her life to the empowerment of women. Since its creation in 2012, Girls Who Code have reached over 185,000 girls at almost every stage of their educational journey inspiring them to major in computer science and helping to close the gender gap in entry-level computer science jobs. In addition to being the founder of Girls Who Code, Saujani is also a lifelong activist and was the first Indian American woman to run for U.S. Congress in 2010. She will attend the inauguration ceremony and name the new ship during celebrations in Southampton, England, on March 30, 2020.
Commonly, after a new ship is built, a civilian is selected who represents the spiritual embodiment of the vessel. Typically, a woman is selected to be the ships “godmother” and is meant to inspire, protect, and bring good luck to all of those who sail on board. Celebrity selected the Nobel-Peace-Prize winning Malala as the godmother of the first ship in this series, the Celebrity Edge. Instead of continuing the tradition of selecting female performers or entertainers as the godmothers of their vessels, Celebrity is ushering in a paradigm shift in the way godmothers are chosen by prioritizing women who are strong leaders and innovators bringing forth social change. Overall, the Edge series is focused on selecting godmothers who are inspiring, innovative and promote the betterment of women’s lives.
Celebrity’s shift in perspective has firm ties to its leadership by Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, who is the first female president and CEO within the corporation. As a strong female leader, she has taken it upon herself to leverage her position of authority in a way that empowers not only other women, but also diversity and inclusion in general. Lutoff-Perlo believes that change needs to come from within, and as the internal culture of Celebrity Cruises continues to shift to that of more inclusivity, the company’s emphasis on empowerment and diversity is being extended to its guests as well. Celebrity will be collaborating with Girls Who Code to offer educational coding programs as a part of the cruise line’s Camp at Sea STEM experiences onboard the Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge. The Celebrity Apex will begin its first season in April 2020 with sailings to Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean.
