An island state located off the southern tip of India, Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, has had a long and varied history. Its written history goes back well over 2,600 years, having been an important part of the Hindu legend of Ramayana. In this legend, the island referred to as Lanka is the fortress of the King Ravana, who captured the wife of Rama, an incarnation of the Hindu God, Vishnu. Legend has it that Hanuman, the monkey god, flew over to Lanka and destroyed the capital by setting it on fire, while Rama and his remaining troops later crossed over from the mainland by building a land bridge across the sea. More recently, the island was ruled four times by the Portuguese, Dutch and most recently the British. It was a colony from 1802 to 1946 and then gained independence. The island suffered through a civil war which has now been peacefully resolved and is looking at a bright and prosperous future. This carefully crafted itinerary will show us all that the island has to offer from gracious cities to jungles and wildlife, delightful beach resorts, historic temples and so much more. The group will be strictly limited in size so we encourage you to register early.

This journey is suitable to most active and fit travellers. You will enjoy wonderful meals, excellent accommodations and a well run tourist infrastructure. However there are long flights to this remote destination and several sites involve long walks and rough surfaces. In particular, two visits involve many steps and steep climbs (members may stay with the coach if they prefer).
