Colombia, Country of Coffee and Culture

Post date: Author:

Following our first successful tour to Colombia last winter, we are pleased to once again offer this intriguing destination. Colombia is a small but very physically diverse country on the northern coast of South America. For decades, it was a country known for drugs, banditos and violence. But for the past decade, this mountainous land has been growing in popularity as a destination known for friendly people, colonial heritage, wonderful beaches, great food, extensive coffee plantations and so much more. With the changing political atmosphere and vastly improved security, travellers are now discovering what this South American gem has to offer.
Our adventure begins with Air Canada’s nonstop from Toronto to the Andean capital of Bogota, a cosmopolitan city known for excellent restaurants and varied museums and art galleries, including the famous Gold Museum. Here and in nearby villages, we find examples of the country’s rich colonial past and its Spanish influences, and the impressive Salt Mine Cathedral. Just a short flight from the capital we find the lush greenery of the coffee region; home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, as well as the morning brew for which it gets its name. Medellin, known as the city of eternal spring for its year round delightful climate, is home to the Museo de Antioquia. Here we find the largest collection of Fernando Botero’s magnificent and unique works of art. Without a doubt, Botero is Colombia’s favourite artist and I am sure that you will be impressed by his works, many of which can be found throughout the city.
Of course, no trip to Colombia would be complete without a stay in colourful Cartagena, on the sunny Caribbean coast. Its massive fortresses, exquisite colonial buildings, charming restaurants and treasure-filled shops are the perfect ending to this sultry winter escape. In a country that is home to such diversity, there is much to offer inquisitive travellers.
We have created a relaxed itinerary featuring just four hotel stays, three nights each, in the four most interesting regions of the country – Bogota, Armenia (coffee country), Medellin and on the coast in Cartagena. We invite you to join group escort, Ian Noseworthy for a delightful Colombian adventure!  (this article is for a past departure).
