Located at the crossroads between East and West, Iran has its roots in the ancient empire of Persia, established in the 6th century BC. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran isolated itself from the western world in an attempt to protect itself from non-Muslim values and influences, making it an international outcast. Since the death in 1989 of Ayatollah Khomeini, leader of the Islamic Revolution, Iran has been making attempts to open its doors to foreign visitors. Today, we find a country made up of many ethnic groups and influenced through the ages by Greek, Arab, Turkic, and Mongol occupiers. The various trails of the Silk Road crossed through this land bringing goods, spices, knowledge and more. As a result, Iranians are endlessly welcoming. For those who think of Iran as a dark, dangerous place full of fundamentalist fanatics, visiting the real Iran will be a most magical and pleasant experience.  Our inaugural journey to this ancient land has been carefully planned to put you in the footsteps of history when Persia was a great world power. Walk around the sublime, turquoise-tiled domes and minarets of Isfahan’s Naqsh-e Jahan (Imam) Square, the awesome power and beauty of the Achaemenid’s ancient capital at Persepolis, the mud-brick alleys and rooftops in Yazd, and exquisite gardens designed from verses in the Quran to reflect paradise. We will explore historical sites, palaces, mansions, mosques, and museums, with ample time to shop in some of the world’s most amazing bazaars for carpets, jewellery, textiles, and so much more. Savour flavourful and exotic Persian cuisine and relax in a classical teahouse.   This unique journey will be limited to 28 members and is sure to fill quickly, so we urge you to enroll early.

While this journey will feature best available comfortable hotels and mostly excellent roads, we are visiting a land that has seen relatively few western travellers and facilities outside major centres may be relatively basic. The journey features long flights, some long driving days and a good many walks over uneven ground (some with many steps). Temperatures may vary from cool nights to hot days. Iran follows a strict Islamic code and we will face dress restrictions while in the country. Members must be physically fit and active to fully enjoy this tour.
